Description
Contemporary art and outsider art: what dialogue between “inside” and “outside”? Can art brut, outsider art, irregular art be said to be the same, similar or different? How do you recognize the status of artist? Does art create bonds? These are some of the questions that run through the volume, soliciting multiform answers that document the arbitrariness of the borders erected in/by the art system and the search for new interpretative categories starting from the questions that emerged in the The art of making a difference project. The contributions collected here bear witness to part of the scientific reflection developed on the occasion of the International Study Day (Turin, 14 December 2012) and the International Conference (Turin, 26 May 2014) which respectively concluded the first and second edition of the project. Two events which, placing themselves in a relationship of continuity and progressive theoretical deepening, offered the opportunity to discuss some problematic nodes of Italian experiences with an attention paid to the European and international scenarios. In the first part of the volume, theories and practices are presented that look at, and problematize, the categories of Art Brut, outsider art, irregular art from disciplinary angles and perspectives which, in their diversity, favor areas of encroachment and contamination. The second part brings together more heterogeneous works, in terms of contents and methods of communication and representation, which investigate the relationship between art and anthropology and the different contributions that can contribute to enhancing cultural heritage, also from an artistic point of view. Without wanting to feed ambitions or pretensions to systematicity with respect to a complex and constantly debated topic, the work gives a snapshot of an ongoing process, recognizing in the creative and transformative potential of the margins between knowledge and practices the ability to broaden understanding of relativity, fluidity and permeability of artistic making.
