Description
Paratissima, on the basis of the great success achieved in recent years, presents the VI edition of N.I.C.E .: New Independent Curatorial Experience, a course for curators that has proved to be both an educational opportunity and a place for practical experience. Paratissima, which in recent years has had an exponential growth, both for cultural offer and for public response, is an event born outside of pre-packaged and institutional schemes. In a cultural context in crisis, which can count less and less on public contributions, Paratissima, now in its fifteenth edition, is an example of how it is possible to operate by moving in an independent riverbed. N.I.C.E. was born with the aim of offering young aspiring curators the tools to be able to build an autonomous professionalism, capable of operating also through alternative channels. The course dealt with all aspects of the complex profession of the curator, involving both external teachers and the young professionals of Paratissima staff as trainers. These have passionately shared the know-how acquired over years of experience. Starting from the conception and construction of the curatorial project, topics of fundamental importance were addressed such as fundraising, communication and set-up. From the beginning of the course, simultaneously with the lectures, the 11 students were engaged in a phase of laboratory experience. The students were involved in the organization of six different group exhibitions and conducted specific research in order to select and invite the artists to be included in their project. Consistent with the mission of the event, which aims to carry out talent scouting actions towards emerging artists, including N.I.C.E. intends to promote young curators by offering them the opportunity to demonstrate their talent, making them confront directly with the curatorship of an exhibition since its conception. Hence the five exhibitions that deal with transversal themes.
We thank those who attended the course for their commitment and professionalism:
Erminia Abbuonandi, Maria Rosaria Cavaliere, Federica D’Avanzo, Giulia Giglio, Giulia Montini, Erika Gravante, Paolo Lolicata, Lucia Melioli, Laura Pieri, Marta Saccavino, Alessandra Villa.
Born in 2014, the N.I.C.E. it stands today as a hotbed of young talents. The emerging curators have proved capable of tackling some of the most current issues of contemporary society with originality and a careful eye, demonstrating the skills acquired in the realization of those exhibition projects that constitute the very heart of Paratissima.
