Description
N.I.C.E. New Independent Curatorial Experience celebrates an important milestone achieved in 2023: the current edition was in fact the tenth for this peculiar training course aimed at young people intending to embark on a professional career as a curator. The Master was born in Turin in 2014 with the aim of creating a synergy between the workplace and training path, between young curators and emerging artists, thus finding its scope of application in the context of the Paratissima event. Over time, the exhibitions have given rise to NICE&Fair, a truly autonomous section within the Paratissima program and the Turin art week in November. To give an indication of some numbers, in ten editions 132 students were trained and 65 exhibitions were produced, which approximately involved almost 800 artists in total. Paratissima, which has had exponential growth in recent years, both in terms of cultural offering and public response, is an event born outside of pre-packaged and institutional schemes. In a cultural context in crisis, which can count less and less on public contributions, Paratissima, now in its nineteenth edition, constitutes an example of how it is possible to operate in an independent context. N.I.C.E. was born with the aim of offering young aspiring curators the tools to build an autonomous professionalism, capable of operating also through alternative channels. The course covered all aspects of the complex profession of the curator, involving both external teachers and young professionals from the Paratissima staff as trainers.
They passionately shared the know-how acquired over years of experience. Starting from the conception and construction of the curatorial project, topics of fundamental importance such as fundraising, communication and exhibition were addressed. From the beginning of the course, at the same time as the lectures, the 16 students were engaged in a laboratory experience phase. The students were involved in the organization of six different collective exhibitions and conducted specific research in order to select and invite the artists to include in their project. Consistent with the mission of the event, which aims to carry out talent scouting actions towards emerging artists, N.I.C.E. intends to promote young curators by offering them the opportunity to demonstrate their talent, having them directly deal with the curation of an exhibition right from its conception. From here the six exhibitions arise which address transversal themes, closely linked to contemporaneity. We thank those who participated in the course for the commitment and professionalism demonstrated: Chiara Bodrato, Mario Bronzino, Lucrezia Caliani, Francesca Calzà, Arianna Campanelli, Giovanni Ceriello, Greta De Marchi, Davide Delia, Carla Gerbino, Martina Ghignatti, Stefania Lo Porto, Benedetta Roberto, Carolina Ruggeri, Agnese Ventura, Vincenza Oriana Virgillito, Iryna Yerofeyeva.
