VIALE FABIO
Fabio Viale studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Turin.
Fabio Viale’s sculptures impress with their technical virtuosity, enchant with their sinuous beauty and entertain with their gentle irony. Also interesting is the provocative aspect of his approach to sculpture, in an attempt to renew its characteristics by bringing together classical art and modern expressions, such as tattoos.
Fabio Viale is an illusionist of matter capable of “transforming” marble into polystyrene, paper and popcorn, and with his good-natured trickster spirit he has on several occasions staged events that have deceived the press and created installations documenting events that never happened . Incredible replicas of ordinary objects – a tire, a plastic box, a paper bag – upend expectations by challenging our common assumptions.
In his work he opts for complete physical involvement with his art. In one of his most surprising performances, he sailed a 600 kg boat completely sculpted in marble from the waters of the Tiber River in Rome and the Gorky Park lake in Moscow (“Aghalla” 2002); a substance not normally known to float. On another occasion, he pushed a one-ton white Carrara marble replica of a heavy-duty truck tire through the streets of Turin (“Opera Rotas” 2005).
Main Exhibitions:
In 2009 he exhibited in a solo show that attracted the attention of over 30,000 visitors at the Loft Project Etagi in St. Petersburg. On that occasion, “Ahgalla” was launched on the waters of the Neva River, with the major Russian television newspapers present.
In 2011, the Moscow Garage center for contemporary art dedicated a solo exhibition to him. The following year, the Museo del Novecento in Milan exhibited his most representative works, acquiring a sculpture for its permanent collection.
In 2013 he exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Sperone Westwater Gallery in New York.
In January 2018 he presented the exhibition “Lucky Ehi” – a replica of Michelangelo’s Vatican Pietà, but without the Christ at the new Milanese space of the Poggiali Gallery. After a few months it is transported off the coast of Lampedusa.
In July 2018 he inaugurated a solo exhibition at the Glyptothek in Munich where he exhibited 11 mostly large sculptures, while in the Königsplatz, the square in front of the museum, for the first time a work of contemporary art was placed, his monumental “Laocoon” in tattooed white marble.
In November 2018 he inaugurated a solo show at the Gagliardi and Domke gallery in Turin, entitled “Fifteen” to celebrate 15 years of collaboration with the gallery. The most iconic works of Viale and some monumental ones are exhibited, covering the entire post-industrial exhibition area of Via Cervino 16, in Turin
In 2019 he participated in the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale.
In June 2020 the public exhibition “Truly” inaugurated in Piazza del Duomo in Pietrasanta (Lucca).
In 2021 he opens his personal exhibition at Villa Maritime, during the artistic event Un Été au Havre, Le Havre, France and in autumn he inaugurates his exhibition “In Between” in the magnificent rooms of Palazzo Reale in Turin. At the same time he participates in the exhibition dedicated to Antonio Canova, “Canova between innocence and sin” at the MART in Rovereto, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.
In 2022 the personal exhibition “Aurum” opens, a widespread exhibition in the historic center of Arezzo, which collects more than 40 works by the sculptor.
Awards:
2012 – First Prize from the Henraux Foundation in Querceta.
2014 – winner of the 15th Cairo Prize.
2017 – 52nd International Le Muse Award – Salone del Cinquecento at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
