STOISA LUIGI

Luigi Stoisa was born in Selvaggio di Giaveno (Turin) in 1958, where he currently lives and works.
His artistic activity began at the end of the 70s, when he was still a student at the Art Academy in Turin, where he obtained the diploma in Painting.
In 1984, he made his debut with his first solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Gallery “Tucci Russo”, in Turin: his research therefore started in the 80s – during the post-modern era – and his first “mature” artworks date back to those years.
Since then, all his poetry has always been linked to the change of matter, which inexorably modifies forms and images: in this regard, the central element of his works is tar – which is strongly present in many of Stoisa’s works – with its incredible power to transform itself so as the materials around it.
However, Stoisa has worked with many other materials, always experimenting new techniques, from painting (declined in various forms) to sculpture (using terracotta and bronze), from multi-material installations to drawing, “first form of the idea”.
He was a preeminent figure during important solo and collective exhibitions in venues such as, among the others: Fundación Joan Miró in Barcelona (Spain, 1985); De Appel Foundation in Amsterdam (Netherlands, 1986); Museum of Contemporary Art “Luigi Pecci” in Prato (Italy, 1988); Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice (France, 1993); Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin (Germany, 1996); Monumental Complex of St. Michael in Ripa Grande di Roma (Italy, 2004); Royal Palace of Caserta (Italy, 2005); XVIII Sculpture Biennale of Carrara (Italy, 2008); Palazzo Litta in Milan (Italy, 2010); Academy of Fine Arts in Turin (Italy, 2010); Frost Art Museum in Miami (USA, 2011); Palazzo Chiablese in Turin (Italy, 2011); Royal Palace of Venaria (Italy, 2017).
He also won many awards for the realization of numerous sculptures intended as street furniture for urban places and public buildings: winner of the “Umberto Mastroianni” Prize (Turin, 1996); light installations for Luci d’Artista (Turin, from 1998 to today); installation for A.I.S.M. (Turin, 2004); bronze sculptures for the public library Italo Calvino (Turin, 2008); creation of the Holy Door for the Turin’s Cathedral (2015). He currently collaborates with “La nuova pesa” gallery in Rome.
Many art experts and critics have written about him, including: G. Dorfles, F. Poli, G. Verzotti, M. Bertoni, G. Castagnoli, A. Barzel, G. Ciavoliello, M. Meneguzzo, D. Trento, C. Levi, D.
