The spotlight is on a profession that has always been at the heart of the history of costume and society. Each chapter of HAIRITAGE tells of an excellent legacy, to be explored and passed on to new generations. Fifty curious and fascinating case histories testify to the cultural heritage created by hairdressing over the centuries. From Matilda Harper, inventor of franchising, to Marcel Grateau, who patented the first tools of the trade. Then comes the story of Antoine, intertwined with that of Coco Chanel and that of Alexandre de Paris, coiffeur to Grace Kelly and French Haute Couture. In Swinging London, we find Vidal Sassoon, the architect of hair, and Leslie Cavendish, the Beatles’ hairdresser; and Sam McKnight, who became famous for Lady Di’s haircut. In Barcelona, Llongueras left his mark as a 360-degree artist and friend and biographer of Dalí. And again: Aldo Coppola, the ‘master of color’, the Carita sisters, pioneers of ‘total beauty’, the Mascolo brothers and Trevor Sorbie, alongside whom many contemporary hairstylists trained.

Roberto Pissimiglia, publisher and journalist, has been a leading figure in the world of hairdressing and specialized press for fifty years. An expert in fashion, lifestyle, art, and current affairs, he has met all the great figures who have shaped the history of hairdressing.
Born into a family of hairdressers, he inherited his parents’ passion for publishing and the first periodical dedicated to beauty and hair: Estetica, which Roberto Pissimiglia spread worldwide, creating a network of 18 print and online editions. Roberto Pissimiglia is a successful entrepreneur, speaker, photography exhibition curator, and communications professional, with a large following among industry professionals in Italy and around the world.

A tribute to Beppe Fenoglio

The reason for this tribute to Beppe Fenoglio lies in the impression that reading his writings helps us live better.
The motivation is a persistent love that I try to address.
I made 100 drawings and selected 100 short excerpts from Beppe Fenoglio’s texts taken from the complete edition edited by Dante Isella, Einaudi-Gallimard in the Biblioteca della Pléiade (1992).
In dialogue with each fragment of text, but without any didactic intention, I propose a pencil drawing on paper: variations, subtractions, and digressions based on photographs I took in the Langhe at San Benedetto Belbo and archival images of Beppe Fenoglio. I search in his face, body, and places for evocative signs of his extraordinary writing.
After an initial lifelike representation, I move away with simplifications, deformations, plays on lines, shapes, and colors, attempting to capture aspects specific to that gaze and evocative of his brilliant writing ability.
For the drawings, I used the simplest supports and tools: paper, pencil, and in some cases acrylic paints.
I worked until I ran out of energy to continue.
The destination of this work didn’t affect my motivation to continue; even the possible destination of the fireplace didn’t deter me from this attempt to pay homage to Beppe Fenoglio. (From the introduction by Pino Chiezzi)

“During my long career as a Drawing and Art History teacher, taught at numerous high schools in Turin and its province, I collected the most curious errors I found in class assignments in a notebook, which I called black because of the color of the cover.
When I distributed the corrected papers, I read the blunders I found, maintaining my anonymity. The students enjoyed it and, in the process, gained a better understanding of the topics covered.
To facilitate the reader’s understanding, I highlighted the corrected version and drew some of the cited works.
The reason that prompted me to publish this collection, besides the students’ request, is to inspire a little laughter in those who wish to read it.” (From the introduction by Piera Perotti)

Nietzsche Ditirambo Folie a Torino

“Nitzsky. Nietzsche Ditirambo Folie a Torino” (Nitzsky. Nietzsche Dithyramb Folie in Torino) is a play that focuses on the madness of F. Nietzsche (1844–1900), which manifested itself and persisted until his death on January 3, 1889, when the German philosopher, who was staying in Piazza Carlo Alberto, surrendered to it in a fraternal embrace to a fallen horse, whipped by a merciless coachman in Piazza Carignano. This thematic core underpins the delirium of the simultaneously obsessed and unhinged mind of the thinker who, in Turin, had written, during 1888, “The Case of Wagner,” “Twilight of the Idols,” “The Antichrist,” “Ecce Homo,” and “Nietzsche Contra Wagner,” as well as a significant number of letters from his extensive correspondence. This text is, for its author, an attempt at a landing (or a shipwreck, no one knows how gently endured) after setting sail (it was 1987) from Weichelt’s studio in search of the sources for “Zarathustra.” This, and the subsequent conscious landings made during this not-so-brief voyage, are noted in the bibliographical notes and final acknowledgements.

Limited edition: 200 numbered copies, signed, with a unique artwork

We have no danger of invasion: no neighboring people would want to annex a parliamentary kingdom with human greenhouses and buttons for coins, which elects Usurers by lottery and does not have the sea.

Inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s Alphabet of Death (1524) – 24 initial letters that narrate the dance of death in hierarchical order, from the pope to the child – this volume reinterprets each letter in a visual and poetic composition.
Fannidada and Luca Ragagnin create an epistolary dialogue made of surreal verses and satirical images, playing with full and empty spaces in a fusion of art history and contemporary memento mori.

“Leafing through a copy of the Rizzoli Larousse Great Universal Encyclopedia, we discovered the existence of the Alphabet of Death, a series of 24 initial letters created in 1524 by the German artist Hans Holbein the Younger and engraved on wood by Hans Lutzelburger.
Hans Holbein was a very productive artist: during his residence in Basel, a well-known center for studies and dissemination of the ideas of the Protestant Reformation, he created cycles of images dedicated to the Dance of Death.
The subtly satirical images of dancing skeletons with women and men took up the late medieval allegory of the dance of death, a memento mori addressed to all members of society starting with the pope and then following the emperor, the king, the queen, common people such as the drunkard and the usurer, up to the last element of the social ladder, the child.
Unlike previous representations, where the dance took place in a single place and in a single scene, Holbein divided the danse macabre into individual images that he subsequently arranged as initials, according to the social hierarchy of the time, in the Alphabet of Death.
We too, influenced by the history of these images, decided to create our own reinterpretation using the identical volumes of the encyclopedia that we had kept for many years.
Just as Luca Ragagnin, in an invented modernity, followed Holbein’s scheme by matching each letter of the alphabet with the corresponding social figure. A sort of exchange of letters was born, which saw Luca regularly sending his surreal compositions inspired by our initials, while we responded to his submissions by constantly adjusting the full and empty spaces with great mutual amusement”. (fannidada)

The book documents the exhibition “Colonial Scenography. FIAT 633NM” by Eleonora Roaro housed in the spaces of the Diffused Museum of Resistance, Deportation, War, Rights and Freedom in Turin, which stages a reflection on the colonial imaginary, which the artist starts from an exercise in micro-history, using parts of his own family archive to bring out the negated, falsified and repressed aspects of the Italian colonial adventure. The audio-video installation, which welcomes the visitor at the end of a historical-critical path on the colonial experience in Italian East Africa, is an exercise in colonization of our imagination and is the result of a double research, intellectual and artistic, which aims to produce an effect of disorientation capable of questioning the repressed elements of our history, problematizing the figure of the male colonizer, white and European and the biographical link that connects him to the artist in relation to a geography that becomes landscape and “scenography” of the colonial adventure.

Interpreted on stage by Farian Sabahi, We the Women of Tehran – written in the first person from a female standpoint – illustrates the origins of the Iranian capital and its contradictions, and the rights of religious minorities and women. It showcases women who have played a leading role in various fields, including sports, although all too often they have simply been an element in the propaganda of the regime. This is an animated reading with verses by the great Persian poets and a hefty dose of irony, as a way to smile about complex issues and demolish common stereotypes.

EBOOK

Yemen is a complex country. Its prosperity depends on the ability of the central authority to manage the scarcity of resources (water, oil, gas), religious diversity and tribal powers. In the Yemeni equation, the tribes represent the most pragmatic element: they stay with whom it suits and, if necessary, change alliances. Because of this they have been able to withstand events for millennia. Modern Yemen is a presidential republic (the President is also head of the executive) with a National Assembly made up of members elected for five years. It is the only republic of the Arabian Peninsula and was born from the merger, on May 22, 1990, between North Yemen and South Yemen. The North has been a republic since November 26, 1962, following the coup that overthrew the Zaydite monarchy. Formerly a British protectorate, the South was an independent socialist republic since November 20, 1967 and, linked to the USSR, played a role in the Cold War. A quarter of a century after its reunification, Yemen became the scene of a war that seems to have no end and is putting its unity at risk. From the very beginning, ʿAlī ʿAbd Allāh Saleh, voted by the Assembly on 1 October 1994 and re-elected on 20 September 2006, had presided over the unified Republic of Yemen. to implement a management of the scarce resources of Yemen. Saleh was killed on 4 December 2017 in Sana’a by the Huthi rioters he had fought against for years, with whom he had allied himself after the Arab Spring and the handover to Manṣūr Hādī. Saleh had betrayed the Houthis who for a year and a half exploited the alliance with their former enemy for their own purposes and then assassinated him and took revenge on how he had long treated them.
