Ninety-five Poems 2024 - 2025

As in her previous collection, “Il tempo che rimane” (The Time That Remains), the theme of time continues to run throughout the work. It is depicted in its intrinsic fragility but also implicitly linked to the art of writing, itself ephemeral and transitory. Time and silence pervade the work and lend it the allure of authenticity. The night is not blue, as the title ironically suggests, but at certain moments in life the author likes to imagine that her poetic gaze can work miracles. Grazia Valente’s poetry, despite being firmly anchored in reality, expands and transcends reality, becoming a portal to the universe. With her delicate and explosive verses, at times tender, at times sharp, the author explores the themes of suffering, love, the human condition, and death. We are faced with a mature work, born of silence and an intense, solitary relationship with poetry and life. This collection is composed of ninety-five poems, written between 2024 and 2025.

Grazia Valente was born in Turin, where she lives.
She is the author of prose and poems, some of which have been awarded and published in magazines and anthologies. In 1999 she won the national Haiku Contest prize promoted by the Japanese Cultural Institute (Rome). One of her stories, winner of a R.A.I. competition, was broadcast on the radio and included in an anthology (Edizioni ERI). Some of her poems have been set to music by the Duo Pizzulli. (voice, piano and violin). The contemporary artist Chen Li has graphically interpreted some poems taken from various published and unpublished collections. She currently collaborates with Letizia Gariglio’s online periodical Parole in rete. Works: with the publishing house Portaparole the following have been published: “Il poeta” (The poet), 2012 and “Fillide amorosa”, 2013. With the publisher Achille e La Tartaruga: “Ambaradonna”, 2015; “La fatal quiete” (The fatal quiet), 2017; “Se un filo d’erba basta a farti ombra” (If a blade of grass is enough to cast a shadow on you), 2018; “Galleria delle bellezze – Ritratti femminili in forma di collage” (Gallery of beauties – Female portraits in the form of collages), 2018; “All’ombra dello zen – 99 microracconti” (In the shadow of zen – 99 micro-stories), 2019; “Haiku dei timidi passi” (Haiku of timid steps), 2021; “A proposito di Thomas B. – viaggio nel labirinto della scrittura di Thomas Bernhard” (About Thomas B. – a journey into the labyrinth of Thomas Bernhard’s writing), 2022. With Prinp Editore: “Il sogno – poesie di Grazia Valente – opere di Chen Li” (The dream – poems by Grazia Valente – works by Chen Li), 2022; “Il tempo che rimane” (The time that remains), 2024.

In this new collection of poems, Marcella Saggese seems to regard the city as the space of a peculiar, intense topography of feelings. The city observed and described here is explicitly Turin, in poems that often provide precise indications of streets, squares, gardens, and monuments. The city is often viewed from a window overlooking a square “so round it seems like a medallion,” a chosen place of observation and at the same time a subtle indication of a possible marginalization of the gaze, as the title of the collection also suggests, where urban life and experience seem to be contemplated from a peripheral vantage point, rather than from the center of the action. And even where other cities appear, such as Brussels or Barcelona, they too are typically seen from Turin, from the constant perspective of family affections, in the inescapable interplay of memories and the return of loved ones.

Nietzsche Ditirambo Folie a Torino

“Nitzsky. Nietzsche Ditirambo Folie a Torino” (Nitzsky. Nietzsche Dithyramb Folie in Torino) is a play that focuses on the madness of F. Nietzsche (1844–1900), which manifested itself and persisted until his death on January 3, 1889, when the German philosopher, who was staying in Piazza Carlo Alberto, surrendered to it in a fraternal embrace to a fallen horse, whipped by a merciless coachman in Piazza Carignano. This thematic core underpins the delirium of the simultaneously obsessed and unhinged mind of the thinker who, in Turin, had written, during 1888, “The Case of Wagner,” “Twilight of the Idols,” “The Antichrist,” “Ecce Homo,” and “Nietzsche Contra Wagner,” as well as a significant number of letters from his extensive correspondence. This text is, for its author, an attempt at a landing (or a shipwreck, no one knows how gently endured) after setting sail (it was 1987) from Weichelt’s studio in search of the sources for “Zarathustra.” This, and the subsequent conscious landings made during this not-so-brief voyage, are noted in the bibliographical notes and final acknowledgements.

Poesie scelte e un inedito 1987 - 2017

Do not give in to fashion, do not submit to the market, do not abjure your principles and your literary creed. A difficult choice, but the uncompromising poet does not work for himself, but for poetry and poetry is a free space, where you can sail in the open sea, under a sky without borders,
This volume collects lyrics taken from previous collections published over a thirty-year period, lyrics that, in the author’s opinion, best represent her inner universe and towards which she feels a particular emotional harmony.
Between autobiography and reflections on life and death, the author explores the classic themes of poetry of all time such as: love, the passing of time, old age and death, without shying away from reflection on what it is, and what it means, to be or feel like a poet. The disenchantment and bitterness that shine through in the verses of many lyrics are nonetheless mitigated by a style that assumes the lightness and freshness of the verse and the image as an element of an often joyfully ironic and musically valuable spontaneity.
The overall result is a polyphonic concert that uses words and images, sounds and visions, a mirror that is sometimes clear and sometimes blurry of life itself.
An unreleased piece completes the collection.

Limited edition: 200 numbered copies, signed, with a unique artwork

We have no danger of invasion: no neighboring people would want to annex a parliamentary kingdom with human greenhouses and buttons for coins, which elects Usurers by lottery and does not have the sea.

Inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s Alphabet of Death (1524) – 24 initial letters that narrate the dance of death in hierarchical order, from the pope to the child – this volume reinterprets each letter in a visual and poetic composition.
Fannidada and Luca Ragagnin create an epistolary dialogue made of surreal verses and satirical images, playing with full and empty spaces in a fusion of art history and contemporary memento mori.

“Leafing through a copy of the Rizzoli Larousse Great Universal Encyclopedia, we discovered the existence of the Alphabet of Death, a series of 24 initial letters created in 1524 by the German artist Hans Holbein the Younger and engraved on wood by Hans Lutzelburger.
Hans Holbein was a very productive artist: during his residence in Basel, a well-known center for studies and dissemination of the ideas of the Protestant Reformation, he created cycles of images dedicated to the Dance of Death.
The subtly satirical images of dancing skeletons with women and men took up the late medieval allegory of the dance of death, a memento mori addressed to all members of society starting with the pope and then following the emperor, the king, the queen, common people such as the drunkard and the usurer, up to the last element of the social ladder, the child.
Unlike previous representations, where the dance took place in a single place and in a single scene, Holbein divided the danse macabre into individual images that he subsequently arranged as initials, according to the social hierarchy of the time, in the Alphabet of Death.
We too, influenced by the history of these images, decided to create our own reinterpretation using the identical volumes of the encyclopedia that we had kept for many years.
Just as Luca Ragagnin, in an invented modernity, followed Holbein’s scheme by matching each letter of the alphabet with the corresponding social figure. A sort of exchange of letters was born, which saw Luca regularly sending his surreal compositions inspired by our initials, while we responded to his submissions by constantly adjusting the full and empty spaces with great mutual amusement”. (fannidada)

The idea for the book was born from an intense and refined dialogue between the poems of Pino Menzio, some of which have already been published in the collection “Mar abierto” published in Spain in 2021 and the true driving force of the project, with the works of Marcella Tisi. The artist distances herself from the images evoked directly by the verses, avoids any realistic representation, and instead aims for a particular alchemy, for something deeper and more mysterious. Freeing herself “from what is material and concrete, to elevate herself on a spiritual plane in harmony with the poet”, Marcella Tisi’s art “creates a hypnotic effect that, rather than accompanying the poems from the outside, seems to envelop them in an embrace of strong spirituality. Rarely has a closer interpenetration between word and drawing been seen” (from the introduction by Alejandro Duque Amusco).

“The bitter season of analysis has opened without warning” writes the author in one of the poems in her latest collection. With a secular spirit and without ever abandoning her ironic gaze, the author crosses the interior places that most impact her present: poetry, love, self-awareness and the passage of time, up to the threshold of that Elsewhere that accompanies us since birth.
Every moment of the present intersects with that dark time that we call Infinity, which we look at with fear, curiosity, fatalism or, simply, clear awareness, while the time that remains urges us not to lower the sails yet.

Grazia Valente was born in Turin, where she lives.
She is the author of prose and poems, some of which have been awarded and published in magazines and anthologies.

Poesie di Grazia Valente, opere di Chen Li

“Il sogno” is a real artist’s book created by the artist Chen Li with poems by Grazia Valente.
“Il sogno” belongs to our reality, both in relation to psychic activity, which occurs during sleep, and in the more prosaic one of aspiration, desire often relegated to the sphere of the impossible. “Il sogno” can also be considered as a protected area, an interior space to be guarded and preserved, a place to wait for an event that often appears nebulous and difficult to decipher, but which we do not want to give up.
In these compositions, drawn from various collections published since 2012, the theme of the dream has been declined in various ways, depending on the mood at the time of inspiration. And often with an ironic streak, characteristic of my way of understanding – and doing – poetry.
