In this new collection of poems, Marcella Saggese seems to regard the city as the space of a peculiar, intense topography of feelings. The city observed and described here is explicitly Turin, in poems that often provide precise indications of streets, squares, gardens, and monuments. The city is often viewed from a window overlooking a square “so round it seems like a medallion,” a chosen place of observation and at the same time a subtle indication of a possible marginalization of the gaze, as the title of the collection also suggests, where urban life and experience seem to be contemplated from a peripheral vantage point, rather than from the center of the action. And even where other cities appear, such as Brussels or Barcelona, they too are typically seen from Turin, from the constant perspective of family affections, in the inescapable interplay of memories and the return of loved ones.

Since the early 1980s, I’ve been working with Carol Rama professionally, for catalogs, publications, and exhibitions, and little by little, our acquaintance has transformed into a great friendship and mutual respect. Having attended many exhibitions, from the first ones at Giancarlo Salzano’s Gallery to recent years, it came naturally to me to take a few souvenir shots (before digital, no one obsessively photographed anything), and so, without realizing it, I’ve accumulated precious materials that document a world that is slowly disappearing, along with its protagonists.
N.I.C.E. - New Independent Curatorial Experience - XII Edition 2025

N.I.C.E. New Independent Curatorial Experience celebrates a significant milestone in 2025: this year’s edition marked the twelfth for this unique training program, designed for young people intending to pursue a professional career as curators. The Master’s program was launched in Turin in 2014 with the aim of creating synergy between the workplace and the training program, between young curators and emerging artists, and thus found its ideal setting within the Paratissima event. Over time, the exhibitions have given rise to N.I.C.E.&Fair, a truly autonomous section within the Paratissima program and the November art week. To give some numbers, over the years, 163 students have been trained and 77 exhibitions have been produced, involving approximately 1,000 artists. Paratissima, which has seen exponential growth in recent years, both in terms of its cultural offerings and audience response, is an event born outside of pre-packaged, institutional frameworks. In a cultural context in crisis, increasingly unable to rely on public funding, Paratissima is an example of how it is possible to operate within an independent framework.
N.I.C.E. was created with the aim of offering young aspiring curators the tools to build their own independent careers, capable of working through alternative channels as well.
The course covered all aspects of the complex curatorial profession, involving both external instructors and young professionals from the Paratissima staff.
They passionately shared the expertise they’d acquired over years of experience. Starting with the conception and construction of the curatorial project, key topics such as fundraising, communication, and exhibition design were addressed.
Since the beginning of the course, alongside the lectures, the 16 students were engaged in a laboratory phase. The students were involved in organizing six different group exhibitions and conducted specific research to select and invite artists to include in their projects. Consistent with the event’s mission, which aims to scout emerging artists, N.I.C.E. also intends to promote young curators by offering them the opportunity to demonstrate their talent, allowing them to directly engage with the curation of an exhibition from its conception. This has led to the creation of six exhibitions that address transversal themes, closely linked to contemporary life.
We thank those who participated in the course for their commitment and professionalism: Oyku Atan, Giusy Capuano, Eleonora Gandolfi, Asia De Palma, Alessandro Della Santa, Giulia Flecchia, Sofia Giuntini, Cristina La Piccirella, Debora Magno, Irene Palladino, Elisa Perissinotti, Valeria Radkevych, Martina Todaro, Michele Travaglio, Giovanna Tricarico, Irene Tubiolo.
Educational and scientific coordination of the course by Francesca Canfora.

Collezione Florence & Damien Bachelot

A journey through the photographic works of the Florence and Damien Bachelot Collection, one of the most important private photography collections in Europe.
The images in the volume span the twentieth century to the contemporary era and convey, through the human face, a visual narrative of extraordinary intensity. Portraiture, a genre that, well before the era of selfies and self-narration on social media, followed its own path, reflecting changing customs, identities, and worldviews. From documentation to the political use of images, to the artistic experiments that have redefined the very language of photography over the decades, the exhibition is divided into four thematic sections: Current Events, Myths, Society, and Emotions.

Curated by Elena Re

The volume is the catalogue of the exhibition by Giorgio Ciam, “Essere un altro” (Being Someone Else), curated by Elena Re and held at the Reggia di Venaria.
An iconic element of the work of Giorgio Ciam (Pont-Saint-Martin, 1941 – Turin, 1996) is that of transformation, with which he experimented between 1972 and 1974. There is also a wonderful artist’s book by him entitled Essere un altro (Being Someone Else) documenting this cycle of works, and it is worth noting that Germano Celant displayed it in the exhibition The Small Utopia. Ars Multiplicata at the Fondazione Prada, Venice, in 2012. Ciam’s transformation introduces a theme that Woody Allen would bring to the fore ten years later in his film Zelig. At the same time, it might technically be interpreted as a sort of ‘Photoshop’ avant le mot.
The artist adopts the identity of another person, making two different worlds coexist and using photography as if it were painting. This exhibition features a major work by Ciam entitled Sulla pelle (On the Skin), 1974, from the series Essere un altro. It consists of a series of twelve large photo canvases using photomontage and pictorial interventions, where Ciam’s face transforms into that of his friend the artist George Segal. From one canvas to the next, a new portrait appears: that of a new individual, emerging from the portrait of Ciam. (from the critical text by Elena Re)

Parte I

“Unseen Battlefields – Part I” combines artistic photography and historical documentation. Photographer Arsen Revazov has been working with infrared film since 2010, exploring seemingly ordinary scenarios full of universal stories and great historical value. The book “Unseen Battlefields” includes images that portray landscapes linked to legendary battles, addressing the theme of war with an aesthetic, critical and conceptual approach. Unseen Battlefields is a project of great complexity, which develops into a book and a photographic exhibition. It tells of eleven battles: Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, Cannae, Pharsalus, Hattin, Lepanto, Borodino, Somme, Stalingrad and Dien Bien Phu.

Dal digitale alla chimica del rigore alla sperimentazione

The volume explore creative experiments that combine historical photographic processes with new technologies, with the aim of affirming and fostering an appreciation for a heterogeneous photographic approach, where digital, historical, and artisanal methods merge to create a new contemporary photography. The goal is to redefine the boundaries of Photographic Art by presenting works as authentic “photographic objects,” where the added value stems from the artist’s craftsmanship, perseverance, and passion. The exhibition features works by artists who explore the potential of historical photography, experimenting with materials, tools, and technologies to push the boundaries of past processes. This is an exciting creative quest, where fine-tuning the photographic process is just as important as the choice of subject and image content. In these artists’ works, we find the same experimental spirit as the pioneers of photography, who nearly two centuries ago explored the possibilities and opportunities of this new medium, when much was still evolving and almost everything, if not everything, was possible.

With an interview by Guido Costa

The volume illustrates the collaborative photographic project by the visual artist Simona Galeotti and the photographer Turi Rapisarda that was born at the end of October 2006 in the former cemetery of San Pietro in Vincoli in Turin, Italy, immediately after the success of their self-managed exhibition “Daimon1” , that was conceived and organized by Simona.
“Storie di spettri e di fantasmi” (Stories of Spectres and Ghosts) come to life by playing with the camera in the empty space of the former cemetery by interpreting it, oscillating between aesthetic rigor and the curiosity of the unfathomable.
We are inside a religious-spiritual, magical-scientific experience, – Turi and Simona tell, – when we show our photos of spectres and ghosts in public, we spark a face-to-face meeting full of visions, stories to tell, everyone has
their own, everyone has lived experiences. There are no computer manipulations or in the darkroom, that is where our photos are still printed with the traditional hand method with silver print.

The title of the volume “Entre chien et loup” derives from an ancient French expression that can be translated into Italian as “at nightfall” and embodies the meaning of the project: telling that particular moment of the day characterized by the transition from light to darkness. It is the time of twilight during which it is not possible to distinguish a dog from a wolf, as the French poet Jean-Antoine Baïf wrote in the 16th century.
The twilight described by Sophie-Anne Herin is that of the Envers, the Aosta Valley side occupied mainly by woods and characterized by the scarcity of daylight hours in the winter months. It is, as Olga Gambari writes in the critical text dedicated to the exhibition, “an inverse world outside of time where the artist immerses us, through a photographic work combined with an installation that takes the form of an initiatory journey”.
The images play on contrasts of light, each telling its own story through a free style. “I was born in a country that doesn’t have many hours of light in winter and the idea of dim light is something familiar – explains Sophie-Anne Herin –, a particular variation of brightness that directs my gaze.”
The beginning of the journey “Entre chien et loup” is with images that come out of the shadows, understood both as a moment in which one comes into contact with one’s personal and ancestral fears and as an opening onto another world.
From the twilight we then move on to the night, with images depicting the sky and the stars, until we reach the last chapter dedicated to dreams.
