Quando la comunicazione incontra il design

“Una parola e tutto cambia. Quando la comunicazione incontra il design” (One Word and Everything Changes: When Communication Meets Design) stems from a desire to reach a broad audience—spanning both industry professionals and the general public—by bringing together topics such as communication, design, art, and graphic design, and exploring their connection to accessibility. The concept of accessibility is analyzed starting from its fundamental meaning, establishing a link with the book’s core themes and reflecting the ongoing research and development within the field of “Design for All.” Communication, design, and art should be as accessible to everyone as product advertising. Typefaces serve as the tools for conveying concepts and messages, and the role of design—and visual communication more broadly—is to make them accessible to all. This volume is not merely the result of research into these relationships but also a graphic expression of the concept of accessible communication itself; it features visuals that represent this idea, and the text has been laid out using highly readable, accessible typefaces. This book sparks curiosity and reflection because ““Una parola e tutto cambia” (One Word and Everything Changes).

Pioneer in the birth of Italian design

The volume illustrates an unpublished aspect of the great Master of the twentieth century, “Felice Casorati Designer. Pioneer in the birth of Italian design”, in which furniture and prototypes designed by the artist are reproduced, some of which are visible to the public for the first time. The volume highlights Casorati’s influence in the field of applied arts and furniture, recognizing his role as a pioneer in the birth of Italian design.
The works presented in the volume, edited by the Casorati Archive and with a historical essay by Davide Alaimo, tell the story of the 1920s, a period during which Casorati developed a fruitful partnership with the patron Riccardo Gualino, whose commissions allowed him to experiment and put himself to the test as an “interior decorator”, architect, today we would say “designer”. Riccardo Gualino wrote in his autobiography, published in 1931: “It was an act of courage to grant carte blanche to a painter to create architecture.” In 1925, Riccardo and Cesarina Gualino entrusted Casorati with the design of the small theater in via Galliari in Turin, the furnishings of the dance school and part of his private home. It was in this period that the painter began to design chairs, stools, tables, bookcases, combining his artistic poetics with that of design, and calling the young architect Alberto Sartoris to collaborate with him in the design of the private theater. Also presented in the collection, in a completely new form, are the first projects for furniture with the dry oil on paper technique, a particular technique of Casorati, which allows an innovative reading of three-dimensional forms.

Study on the Design for a Food Brand

The needing for a design that takes into account the unitary vision to be given to all the components of the brand system is a central issue that contemporary designers must deal with, since the growing complexity and diversification of the areas of intervention of a brand requires that each of its manifestations can operate autonomously but consistently with respect to the primary structure of the branding project.
In this book, the various instances of research and inspiration that have been investigated have led − through the implementation of a speculative design project − to the definition of a flexible method, an aid for anyone approaching a branding design project, particularly in the food sector, which has always been considered a minority compared to the large areas of design but which in recent years has exploded from the bottom as a sector of interest that requires a specific approach and design.
This is how the “Nova Project” comes to life, an exercise of imagination that brings attention to conviviality and active participation as a response to the social criticalities of our present, using food as a means to provoke that reaction capable of triggering a relationship. Page after page, starting from the definition of the concept and arriving at the applications, the profile of a new brand is thus delineated that presents itself as a subject committed to the current gastronomic panorama, with an offer that ranges from informed and conscious purchasing to large-scale educational training.

“Design tra spazio e forma” (Design between space and form) was born from the desire to communicate the definition of “design” in its various declinations to a large audience. The text collects issues relating to sustainability, especially in the field of architecture and interior design, making careful reflection on buildings and architects in the sector, the so-called “green architects”.
N.I.C.E. - New Independent Curatorial Experience

Paratissima, on the basis of the great success achieved in recent years, presents the VI edition of N.I.C.E .: New Independent Curatorial Experience, a course for curators that has proved to be both an educational opportunity and a place for practical experience. Paratissima, which in recent years has had an exponential growth, both for cultural offer and for public response, is an event born outside of pre-packaged and institutional schemes. In a cultural context in crisis, which can count less and less on public contributions, Paratissima, now in its fifteenth edition, is an example of how it is possible to operate by moving in an independent riverbed. N.I.C.E. was born with the aim of offering young aspiring curators the tools to be able to build an autonomous professionalism, capable of operating also through alternative channels. The course dealt with all aspects of the complex profession of the curator, involving both external teachers and the young professionals of Paratissima staff as trainers. These have passionately shared the know-how acquired over years of experience. Starting from the conception and construction of the curatorial project, topics of fundamental importance were addressed such as fundraising, communication and set-up. From the beginning of the course, simultaneously with the lectures, the 11 students were engaged in a phase of laboratory experience. The students were involved in the organization of six different group exhibitions and conducted specific research in order to select and invite the artists to be included in their project. Consistent with the mission of the event, which aims to carry out talent scouting actions towards emerging artists, including N.I.C.E. intends to promote young curators by offering them the opportunity to demonstrate their talent, making them confront directly with the curatorship of an exhibition since its conception. Hence the five exhibitions that deal with transversal themes.
We thank those who attended the course for their commitment and professionalism:
Erminia Abbuonandi, Maria Rosaria Cavaliere, Federica D’Avanzo, Giulia Giglio, Giulia Montini, Erika Gravante, Paolo Lolicata, Lucia Melioli, Laura Pieri, Marta Saccavino, Alessandra Villa.
Born in 2014, the N.I.C.E. it stands today as a hotbed of young talents. The emerging curators have proved capable of tackling some of the most current issues of contemporary society with originality and a careful eye, demonstrating the skills acquired in the realization of those exhibition projects that constitute the very heart of Paratissima. (from the presentation by Francesca Canfora and Karin Gavassa)

4 young photographers, in collaboration with a graphic designer, during the contemporary art fair The Others, which was held in Turin in the former Le Nuove prison from 4 to 6 November 2011, created a live book / event, in an editorial desk / editorial staff (stand A13 – Prinp Editoria d’Arte 2.0) that worked in progress on the live production of an art book. The images taken by Andrea D’Angelo, Davide De Martis, Vanessa Vettorello and Sara Vindrola are a personal interpretation of the place and the people who animated The Others during the 4 days of the fair. The book, laid out in situ by the young designer Andrea Azzarita, documents the encounter between photography, architecture and the history of the particular location of the Ex Carceri Le Nuove, a future testimony of the first edition of an important art fair event.

A new aesthetic of workplaces and tools

Workshop Aesthetic tells about a new aesthetic of workplaces and tools, without rhetoric, just looking at colors and shapes. For a while workshops and machineries got their own aesthetic. A sort of moral beauty associated to work ethic. A rough and symbolic aesthetic. After that workshops seemed to disappear and spotless, automatic and far production lines seemed to take the place. Machineries and tools fade away from representations and become images related to the past or to not yet developed countries. Reality is different. The most part of what we use daily is realized by hand work, using machines that needs grease and perspiration to operate. At macroeconomic level it is well known that true wealth is production competence.
