The volume documents the retrospective exhibition “Panopticon”, by the artist Claudia Virginia Vitari, set up at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.
This catalogue is a study on the concept of “total institutions” that the artist, born in Turin and living in Berlin, has been researching for almost two decades.
The title refers to Jeremy Bentham’s concept of an ideal prison, where a guard, placed in a central control tower, can observe all the inmates without their knowledge. This system of control reflects the conditions of people residing inside “total institutions”, a term developed by Erving Goffman to indicate places where individuals are isolated from interactions with the outside society and their daily activities are strictly regulated by a central authority.
Vitari’s experimentation with materials responds to the need to find new tools of communication. The use of glass makes this process transparent but at the same time complex and layered, while the silkscreen technique allows for the incorporation of the stories and portraits of those who live within total institutions. The glass objects are embedded in iron structures, a cold and rigid material that symbolizes institutional inflexibility and the attempt to keep individuals detached from society. Social tensions are fixed in glass and exposed as a brutal social experiment. Through large-scale installations that border on the performative act, the exhibition “Panopticon” aims to give visibility to marginalized, almost invisible people. Vitari’s ethnographic, psychological and sociological research, conducted through the study of scientific literature, has allowed her to frame these issues. The artist then spent years talking to people at risk of exclusion to better understand issues related to mental health, incarceration and migration flows.

The prestigious volume documents the exhibition “In Between” by the artist Fabio Viale, which took place in the Royal Museums of Turin: a real incursion of contemporary art within one of the most prestigious universal museums in Italy, which its collections bear witness to much of the history of European art and the social and political history of the country.
The director of the Royal Museums of Turin, Enrica Pagella, writes in the introduction: “The exhibition ‘In Between’ is an arc stretched between past and future, between tradition and experimentation. A past that shows itself in the recognized and recognizable forms of some masterpieces of great sculpture of all time, from classical antiquity to Canova, explored and reproduced with the use of digital technologies; a present that with tattoos inscribes into the material stories that belong to the global world, with the story of oppressed or lost traditions and identities, new myths and new languages, the eternal questioning of the meaning of emotions and feelings that constitute the connective tissue of human communities. A sort of counterpoint to everything that the museum stages: an ‘inside’ made of beauty and inspiration, an ‘outside’ where the fluid life of everyday reality pulsates. Through the keys of wonder, technical virtuosity and creative reinterpretation, the art of Fabio Viale pushes us to look with new eyes at the meaning of the museum, a democratic, open place, permeable to the most diverse experiences around the theme of cultural heritage ; that synthesis of temple and forum hoped for in 1971 by the famous Canadian museologist Duncan Cameron, today made up of spaces that expand infinitely in digital networks, where thousands of virtual visitors have shared reasoning and thoughts around the exhibition.”.
The volume was created thanks to the Poggiali Gallery (Florence – Milan – Pietrasanta).

The book documents the exhibition “Colonial Scenography. FIAT 633NM” by Eleonora Roaro housed in the spaces of the Diffused Museum of Resistance, Deportation, War, Rights and Freedom in Turin, which stages a reflection on the colonial imaginary, which the artist starts from an exercise in micro-history, using parts of his own family archive to bring out the negated, falsified and repressed aspects of the Italian colonial adventure. The audio-video installation, which welcomes the visitor at the end of a historical-critical path on the colonial experience in Italian East Africa, is an exercise in colonization of our imagination and is the result of a double research, intellectual and artistic, which aims to produce an effect of disorientation capable of questioning the repressed elements of our history, problematizing the figure of the male colonizer, white and European and the biographical link that connects him to the artist in relation to a geography that becomes landscape and “scenography” of the colonial adventure.

Cinque donne per i diritti e l’emancipazione

The book illustrates the attempt to give shape in an iconic, poetic and allusive way to the biographical, existential, political and cultural dimension of five illustrious women: Adelaide Aglietta, Isa Bluette, Amalia Guglielminetti, Giorgina Levi, Emilia Mariani. Five exemplary female figures of the twentieth century, who fought for rights and emancipation. Using the languages of art and contemporaneity, Silvia Margaria carries out an exercise in public history, aimed at learning about the existential, political and human biography of five exemplary Turin figures for the struggle for women’s emancipation and the conquest of human rights. The 34 photos that make up the project are the result of a selection from the hundreds that Silvia Margaria shoots in 2015, after having chosen to investigate the female question from a very particular point of view: she analyzes the life of the flowers placed on the graves of the five buried women at the Monumental Cemetery of Turin. The urgency of the artist, in which personal emotions and the almost daily documentary action intersect, is to return the research on the struggle for emancipation through an artistic path that crosses the need to remember and the inevitable realization. of oblivion with the passage of time.

The volume documents the personal exhibition of the artist Claudia Virginia Vitari at the Widespread Museum of Resistance, Deportation, War, Rights and Freedom in Turin. Since 2014 the artist has been dealing with migration, refugees and asylum seekers. The installation on display combines two themes of his most recent project: “Interstitial Identities”. Claudia Virginia Vitari has always focused her work on long research and collaboration projects on social issues such as crime and detention, subjects diagnosed with mental illness and refugees and asylum seekers. The large installations created are accompanied by drawings and serigraphs that illustrate in detail some of the stories that make up the artistic project. The Interstitial Identity work proposes a comparison between two distinct but related “interstitial experiences”: protest and waiting. The “Interstitial Identities” project by Claudia Virginia Vitari represents the most recent stage of an artistic and theoretical research, now ten years old, focused on the relationship between identity and cultural otherness, narratives of inclusion / exclusion, total institutions, discipline of bodies and production of humanity and inhumanity. The artist has always focused his attention on social issues that have to do with “marginality”, discomfort and the forms of normalization and discipline carried out by the institutions, giving life to long research and experimentation projects on materials and languages in the name of a broad relational and participatory approach. These are assumptions that have pushed it over time to relate to subjects with psychiatric diagnoses, prisoners, refugees and asylum seekers. (from the critical essay by Roberto Mastroianni)
