The volume documents the contemporary art exhibition “Slittamento progressivo del linguaggio” (Progressive shifting of language) by Gabriele Boccacini, which is an integral part of the Stalker Teatro project “Metropolitan Art”, a bridge between the performing arts and contemporary art, an exciting journey between works of art and live entertainment, where citizens are the protagonists of a collective adventure. It is an innovative project of education, training, research and artistic production with laboratory and performance activities, visits to museums and the setting up of performance/exhibition spaces. Contemporary art, on a national and international level, is one of the cultural aspects that most characterizes our territory: from the important artistic movements of the 60s, to the first experiences of social theatre, with theatrical animation in the 70s, passing for the experimentation of different disciplines in the following decades. In this artistic and social context, the “Metropolitan Art” project was born in the Turin hinterland; a unique initiative of its kind, divided into different activities: guided visits to contemporary, modern and ancient art museums; workshops to raise awareness of the performing arts; production of multidisciplinary events together with local citizens; training experiences on different artistic disciplines; production of exhibitions and installations/performances; advocacy and networking activities with prestigious cultural centers and events in Italy and abroad.

“Imminente Permanente” (Imminent Permanent) is a contemporary art exhibition that is part of the eighth edition of the Metropolitan Art project curated by Stalker Teatro, conceived by Gabriele Boccacini, artist and theorist of this group that connects the performing arts to contemporary art through a journey between works of art and live performances. The initiative was born in the Turin hinterland, not only a place but also a dynamic melting pot of life and experience, a litmus test of a society in rapid transformation, of a territory which in previous decades was strongly characterized by the presence of Fiat and from the vast satellite activities generated by the automotive industry. The working-class and industrial context, combined with the aristocratic heritage that the city inherited from previous centuries, gave an original physiognomy to its social structure. An urban condition which for over a century has been influenced by events, shaping the historical culture of Turin and opening the stage of communication to the influences of cultures imported from different migrations, which in this place have met, merged, reworked, giving rise to a melting pot which in turn has given birth to new behaviours, cultures, urban and suburban languages of absolute interest, of investigation, not only for a study of the local reality but also of the international one. Education, training, research and artistic production constitute the
fundamental elements of this event, divided into workshops, shows, multidisciplinary events, guided visits to exhibition spaces and museums with the collaboration of relevant national and international cultural centres. Contemporary art takes on a priority role in the new “global local” condition, recognizing its roots in the artistic movements and experiences of the 1960s and in subsequent interdisciplinary research.

“Metropolitan Art”, an initiative that reached its seventh edition in 2022, is a project divided into various activities developed over the course of a year, involving hundreds of people through multidisciplinary workshops, guided visits to participating museums, collective creation of performances, tourist/cultural itineraries and a contemporary art exhibition held at the end of the project.

“Metropolitan Art” is a project conceived and created by Stalker Teatro with the artistic direction of Gabriele Boccacini, with the collaboration of the Education Department of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art and of the other Museums participating in the project: Reggia di Venaria, GAM – Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, PAV – Parco Arte Vivente, Palazzo Madama Civic Museum of Ancient Art.

The 2022 exhibition is a tribute to the Le Vallette district, in District 5 of Turin, where the historic nucleus of Stalker Teatro began working in theatrical animation in the 1970s and created a project entitled “Riprendiamoci il rosso” (Let’s take back the red).

Gabriele Boccacini ALTER METROPOLITAN ART

ALTER testifies to the constant interaction between visual and performing arts that defines the productions of Stalker Teatro, characterized by an authorial competence in the creative path between artistic object and performance. A sort of homecoming for the company, whose original nucleus was formed in the 1970s at the Accademia Albertina.
ALTER presents 11 installations created by Gabriele Boccacini, artist and director of Stalker Teatro, and is part of the METROPOLITAN ART project, founded on the collaboration with the Education Department of the Castello di Rivoli – Museum of Contemporary Art and some of the major museums of the Metropolitan City : GAM Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, La Venaria Reale, PAV Living Art Park Experimental Center of Contemporary Art and Palazzo Madama Museum of Ancient Art. The installations are made with materials that can not only be observed but used and sometimes modified by visitors.
“In its various editions” Gabriele Boccacini writes in the preface “Metropolitan Art has allowed hundreds of people to actively approach art, often for the first time: on the one hand there is the possibility of receiving artistic proposals and on the other of reacting with their own creative energy. Visits to museums, workshops, shared creativity workshops, collective productions of multidisciplinary performances, set-up of exhibitions and finally tourist / cultural itineraries in the territory have made it possible to communicate the experiences to still others, giving the opportunity to join a concrete adventure in the field of artistic imagery “.
Among the installations present in the exhibition, some are connected to exhibitions of the Museums that participated in the Metropolitan Art project, visited by the performers of Stalker Teatro with the groups involved in the workshops. Others, in an anthological perspective, concern past experiences, others are absolute novelties.
“The contamination between disciplines, the expansion of the contexts of production and cultural enjoyment and the ability to make social groups that are usually excluded from them characterize participatory practices today”, comment the curators of ALTER Nicoletta Daldanise and Irene Pittatore. “The paths that have led them from the state of the avant-garde to the full entry into the contemporary art scene tell a long history of experimentation. ALTER keeps track of one of these paths, traveled together by an artist and his community.”
